Mandarin Chinese vocabulary test

Mandarin words appear in characters, with pinyin to show sound and tone, thirty of them, easiest first. Choose each meaning or say you do not know to get a CEFR level and an estimate of how many Chinese words you know.

Guessing makes the result less accurate, not better — "I don't know" is a perfectly good answer. The test stops early once the words get clearly past you.

What each level means

Level	What it means
A1	Greetings, numbers, the everyday nouns
A2	Shopping, directions, routine and family
B1	Travel, work and opinions on familiar topics
B2	Abstract topics, the news, most films
C1	Nuance, idiom, professional vocabulary
C2	Rare and literary words

How the test scores you

Five words are drawn at random from each CEFR level, A1 to C2, out of the graded packs inside Watch Your Language. Every run is a different thirty.
Each has three possible meanings. Wrong answers are subtracted at half a point, the usual correction for guessing among three, so a lucky streak does not inflate the score.
Your level is the highest one where you know at least 60% of the words, with every level below it passed too.
The word count weights each level by its share of the app's 10,000+ words. It leaves out names, most technical terms and word forms, so your real vocabulary is larger.
